What Your Saliva Reveals: The Hidden Link Between Your Mouth and Your Whole Body

Think your gut microbiome matters? Your mouth has one too, and it’s just as telling!
One of our favorite tools in functional dentistry might surprise you: a simple saliva sample. This test lets us see exactly which bacteria live in your mouth, the good, helpful ones and the harmful ones, in a way a visual exam just can’t show. From there, we build a personalized plan, sometimes including diet changes if we see signs of inflammation. Then we retest to make sure it’s actually working, not just easing symptoms.
Testing also catches Candida overgrowth (a type of yeast). This matters because it creates a sticky film that shelters harmful bacteria in your mouth, and if swallowed, it can throw off your gut health too.
The mouth-body connection runs deep. Take heart disease, one of the clearest examples: when your gums are inflamed, harmful bacteria can slip into your bloodstream. From there, they can trigger inflammation, damage blood vessels, and contribute to plaque buildup, raising the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.
That same chain reaction is linked to:
• Rheumatoid arthritis: your immune system, fighting oral bacteria, can mistakenly attack your joints too
• Diabetes, a two-way street: oral inflammation makes blood sugar harder to control, and poor blood sugar control harms oral health
• Alzheimer’s and other brain-related diseases
• Some digestive cancers
This is why we never treat the mouth as separate from the rest of you. What’s in your saliva can be an early warning sign for what’s happening, or what might happen, elsewhere in your body.
Simple ways to support a healthier mouth:
• Brush first thing in the morning, before breakfast, with a microbiome-friendly toothpaste like FYGG. You don’t want to swallow the bacteria that built up overnight
• Skip daily antibacterial mouthwash with alcohol or chlorhexidine: it kills the good bacteria along with the bad
• Drink plenty of water: saliva is one of your body’s natural defenses
• Cut back on refined sugar: it feeds the harmful bacteria more than the helpful ones.
If you’re dealing with chronic inflammation, autoimmune symptoms, or health issues no one can explain, ask us about saliva testing. It might reveal a piece of the puzzle your regular checkups have missed. We’re here for you! 💞
